Max Verstappen is in de eerste race van het seizoen uitgevallen vanwege een elektrisch probleem aan zijn auto. Max kende een goede start vanaf P2 en behield zijn positie. In ronde elf begon de RB16 echter kuren te vertonen en verloor Max alle snelheid. Verstappen wist de pits nog te bereiken, maar aldaar konden de monteurs van Aston Martin Red Bull Racing het probleem niet verhelpen. Valtteri Bottas won, net als vorig jaar, de openingsrace van het seizoen. Mercedes-stalmaat Hamilton kwam achter hem over de finish, maar ontving een tijdstraf van vijf seconden vanwege een incident met Alexander Albon. Dit zorgde ervoor dat Charles Leclerc beslag legde op P2, terwijl Lando Norris in zijn McLaren met de derde plek het eerste podium uit zijn Formule 1-carrière pakte.
Na afloop van de race geeft Max tekst en uitleg: “Het is balen, want het is natuurlijk niet hoe je het seizoen wil starten. Plotseling verloor ik de aandrijving. De auto ging in de anti-stall. Ik weet nog niet precies wat het probleem is, maar daar zullen we wel achter komen. Uiteindelijk maakt het ook niet zo veel uit. We zijn uitgevallen en het is gewoon niet goed.”
Op de vraag of hij na de start dacht de race te kunnen winnen, antwoordt Max: “Al snel kon je zien dat Valtteri erg snel was. Ik reed mijn eigen race. Het zou minimaal een podium zijn geworden, maar er is nu niks meer aan doen.”
